Center for Great Plains Studies names Furlong an affiliate fellow

The Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln named Kirsten Furlong, lecturer in the Department of Art, Design and Visual Studies and gallery director for the Blue Galleries, an affiliate fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies.

The Center for Great Plains Studies is a interdisciplinary regional research and outreach program established in 1976 at the University of Nebraska. The mission of the center is to foster the study of and appreciation for the people, cultures, and natural environment of the Great Plains. The region invites inquiry into the relationships between its natural environment and the cultures brought by its inhabitants, as scholars and residents work to preserve healthy ecosystems and build thriving human communities. The center operates the Great Plains Art Museum, Fellows and Affiliate Fellows program, Graduate Fellows program, various scholarly projects; it publishes Great Plains Quarterly and Great Plains Research; and presents public lectures and symposia.

Fellows constitute the core of the intellectual community that is the center. They publish research and book reviews in the center’s journals, give talks as Olson Lecturers, write for the Center’s book series, speak at annual Great Plains symposia and advise the Great Plains Art Museum. They sit on the Board of Governors and choose the Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize winner. Their work helps the center meet its mission of increasing understanding of and appreciation for the people, cultures, and natural environment of the Great Plains.
