College of Arts and Sciences

Jill AnnieMargaret mounted two solo exhibitions in February and March. The project “Hairstory-Herstory” was featured in the Transitions Gallery at Idaho State University in Pocatello. “Hairstory-Herstory” addresses the basic human rights of women and girls with regard to freedom from sexual assault, child sexual abuse and battery. The installation was made with the aim of creating an immersive experience for the viewer. Silk gauze was selected as the primary material for its strength and translucency. Mirroring the path of healing, the silk is generated from a being in metamorphosis, the silk worm. Multiple layers of gauze create the illusion of suspended, rising and falling hair. The project included voice recordings of women in Buenos Aires, Argentina, speaking about their hair. The project was launched in Buenos Aires in 2014 during AnnieMargaret’s artist residency at Proyecto ‘Ace Studio.

In March, AnnieMargaret opened “Etching Into Existence” at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City, Oregon. This new body of prints was created over the course of three years and utilizes the process of copper plate etching. The origin of this work is rooted in existential questions regarding the nature of memory and human emotion. Trauma’s impact on the brain and the body remains a subject of particular interest. Related ideas include: dreams, night terrors, the subconscious, the after-life, spirit, death and near death experience. “Etching Into Existence” tangentially explores these ideas through the process of intaglio and monoprint.

AnnieMargaret’s work also is currently featured in a two-person exhibition titled “A Legacy of Generosity: The E.C. Boyle Scholarship and the Work of Jill AnnieMargaret and Frank Ryan,” shown at the Library Gallery at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. AnnieMargaret was one of three students at Sonoma State University to receive the prestigious E.C. Boyle Scholarship, which provided one academic year of study abroad in Florence, Italy, and Paris, France. The show runs from through Sept 5.
