Activities
Using Career Information Databases Activity
Students will have the opportunity to become more familiar with the career information databases discussed in the module, and get some practice conducting basic, preliminary research on career options. They will complete a worksheet requiring them to use multiple career information databases to obtain specific pieces of information about two occupations of their choosing. *Note: this activity requires every student have access to a computer, but can be done as an assignment instead if this is not an option. Team Activity – Career Information Database Investigation
This activity will allow students to work in teams to explore a particular career information database or other web resource. Each team will design a brief presentation for the class highlighting what they thought were the most unique or useful features of that resource, allowing all class members to learn more about each career information database from a student perspective. *Note: this activity requires that students have access to at least one computer per team, but can be done as an assignment instead if computers are not available. Family Tree Activity and Discussion
This activity will help students explore what careers they’ve been exposed to by family members and how their family career history has impacted their career interests and choices. Students will create a family tree (career genogram) that they will then explore with group members in a small group discussion. Optionally, this activity can be given as an assignment. Assignments
Reflective Writing
Prompts are provided that will help students process the information they learned. One is offered as a follow-up assignment for students who completed the family tree exercise, while the other can be completed by students who have not done any other activities or assignments. Informational Interview
Students will conduct an informational interview with a professional working in a career field they are considering or planning to pursue.  They are provided with a list of questions to ask, which focus on the use of informational interview described in this module – obtaining in-depth career information from someone who does that job every day. Career Options Word Cloud
Students will use O*NET to generate lists of possible career options based on their interests, abilities, and values, and will then insert those lists into an online word cloud generator to create a career options word cloud. This will help students to better visualize their options, identify themes, and synthesize the information in a way that is difficult to do otherwise. Student and faculty instructions are provided.
