How can teachers create more inclusive classrooms and erode harmful stereotypes? What should educators be aware of to ensure they are accurately representing Indigenous groups? Where are there opportunities to incorporate learning from and about Indigenous groups in the curriculum? These are just a few of the questions this workshop will address.
Throughout this workshop, hosted by the Boise State Writing Project and Boise School District, we will explore the histories and cultures of Idaho tribes and reflect on ways to accurately portray Indigenous groups in classroom instruction. Indigenous educators, historians, and writers will lead sessions on the histories, literature, and contemporary roles of Indigenous peoples and portrayals of Indigenous groups in media, popular culture, and curriculum materials. Additionally, workshop participants will read texts by Indigenous authors, attend the Seven Arrows Powwow, visit local sites that hold historical and cultural significance to regional tribes, and participate in a tour of exhibits featuring Idaho tribes at the Idaho State Museum. Teachers will leave the workshop with resources and strategies for incorporating their knowledge of Idaho tribes and other Indigenous peoples into classroom instruction.
