Since 2012, Dr. Daniel Fologea (BMOL Faculty) has led a summer biophysics research program for local high school students, undergraduate and graduate students. No matter where a student is in their educational career, Daniel wants to provide a transformative experience that makes the students evaluate what they want to do in the future. This past summer, Daniel had 24 student researchers with the financial support of local community member Chris Honcik. The 24 students split into smaller teams between two labs to tackle seven research projects, including new methods of delivering cancer treatments, improve our understanding of cell membranes, and working with local biophysical company Sapidyne Instruments to detect heart failure biomarkers in real time. Daniel wants to see the program to continue growing and provide summer research opportunities to those even outside of Idaho.
