Update on ASBSU Constitutional Convention

Boise, ID – Following a key vote to amend the ASBSU constitution, convention chair Ethan LaHaug released the following statement.

“Last week, student delegates met to begin considering changes to our student government. Specifically, we discussed a proposal to change our voting eligibility requirements from a fee-paying model to a credit-based model. Put simply, we currently allow students to vote in our elections only if they pay student fees–without specifying exactly which fees. The proposed amendment to our constitution would mean we determine who can vote based on the number and type of academic credits they take. In practice, this change would be more clear, more inclusive, and open voting to more student populations.”

“After a period of debate, the delegates voted 8-4 in favor of that proposal. Our work isn’t done, however. The convention is planning to meet one more time to provide a timeline for implementing these changes. That meeting will be on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, at 5:30 pm. It will be on Zoom, and open to the public so all students can join and observe. If you are interested, follow this link.”

“Once a timeline is set, there will be one final layer of approval for this proposal: it must also pass through the ASBSU Assembly and Senate. Though I don’t have a definitive timeline right now, expect a public vote on the amendment before Spring Break.”

“We will continue to provide updates as the process evolves. I am grateful for the campus partners we have collaborated with to advance this proposal, and sincerely hope that our student representatives will vote in favor of expanding voting to more students.”
