2024 Juried Exhibition

ArtSci and The Colors of WaterCalling all Students

The 2024 Juried Exhibition will showcase artistic techniques and innovative media to communicate scientific and technological data and concepts. Entries will be evaluated on conceptual rigor, aesthetic criteria, and the work’s ability to communicate a scientific topic effectively. Partner or group work is encouraged, especially teams with complementary skill sets (e.g., art majors paired with science majors).

Goal

We aim to discover alternative ways to communicate science by applying artistic methodologies. We invite students to investigate new ways of visualizing systems and data and interact with scientific content relevant to the broader Idaho community. This is an opportunity to showcase your technical research, skills, and process by experimenting with new mediums, topics, or partnerships. We encourage submissions that are collaborative and increase the synergies between arts and sciences.

Theme

The exhibition theme encourages a diverse range of expertise to encompass various science and technology fields while remaining accessible to non-experts. This year our chosen theme is “The Colors of Water. From a molecular level to macroscopic and planetary behavior, water is a deceptively complex molecule that gives rise to unexpected and exciting physical and chemical properties. This theme hints at a traditional art medium to encourage a reflection on the intrinsic properties of water, its interactions with light, its forms and states, its connection with life, its environmental role, and its function as a resource for humans and society.

Entry Types

  1. Static works (photos, paintings, renderings, etc.)
  2. Dynamic, motion-based, interactive works (videos, music, app, sonification, etc.)

This juried exhibition is aimed at all the students and researchers/faculty at Boise State University, as well as students in K-12 grades in nearby school districts.

Submission

The submission period has closed.

FAQs

Group entries are encouraged, especially if they involve students from different backgrounds (arts and science). If you want to be put in contact with someone to collaborate on an entry, please contact ArtSci at artsci@boisestate.edu or join our Discord server at ArtSci@Discord. The same links should also be used for any additional inquiry or question related to the Juried Exhibition.

Prizes

Prizes will be offered for the first three works of each entry category and age group. A total of 18 prizes will be awarded. For K-12 submissions, prizes will be awarded to the student(s) and their classrooms. The budget for the prizes is provided by The College of Arts and Science at Boise State and the National Science Foundation.

Awards Selection

A judging committee formed by faculty and administrative staff at Boise State, and potentially representatives from the involved school districts, will evaluate all the submitted entries for awards.

Award Ceremony

The award ceremony will take place on May 22, 2024, at the Center for the Visual Arts and feature scientific seminars for the general public and a light reception. The digital entries will be visualized in The Keith and Catherine Stein Luminary where the public is invited to interact, browse, and zoom in on the entries. Following the ceremony, physical entries will be temporarily displayed in a central campus location for the Boise State community and the public to enjoy.
