Introduction

This report provides a description and analysis of data collected during 1986 and 1987 excavations a the site of Three Island Crossing (10-EL-294), near Glenns Ferry, Idaho. Though this monograph appears some twelve years after the initial excavations, analyses of data have been ongoing and have resulted in a number of presentations and publications.

The present volume considers Three Island Crossing in the context of a series of broad questions which we articulate through carefully delineating our theoretical and methodological approach. We incorporate ideas and results of analyses that have been undertaken during the past twelve years and which are to some extent detailed here. The focus of our initial investigations reflects the research protocol of the mid-1980s.
