2025 Archaeological Field School
Archaeology of Lava Beds National Monument, Northern California
- Anth 448A/648A (6 credits): ~ $1,731 tuition + course fee (TBD) for food, lodging, & transportation within the project area. Tuition is different for non-Nevada residents (credits are typically transferable to a student’s home institution).
- Total Cost: TBD estimated to be ~$2,500
- Dates: May 19 – June 27, 2025
- Prerequisite: Anthropology 105, or other archaeology courses (or consent of instructor). Non-UNR courses are OK.

The 2025 UNR Archaeology Field School will introduce you to all the key elements of archaeological fieldwork while conducting cutting-edge archaeological research at Lava Beds National Monument.
Learn to read and use topographic maps, compass, and GPS
Identify artifacts, features and sites from the pre-contact period to present. Learn to assess the effects of wildfires on archaeological sites
Survey for new sites and record and map them on official state forms
Learn to process and analyze artifacts and write-up your fieldwork
Investigate lava tube caves for archaeological potential.
- Schedule: Three 10-day sessions with 4-day breaks between sessions
- Physical requirements: Be fit enough to hike 10 miles across uneven and sloped terrain
- Accommodations: Wilderness and rustic camping (access to showers and other facilities is limited)
- Work location: Lava Beds National Monument, Northern California
- We supply: Archaeological equipment, project area transportation, food, campsite, communal camp gear
- You supply: Camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc.)
