Summary:

The purpose of the third meeting of the Strategic Planning Task Force (SPTF) was to provide an update of feedback from Key Stakeholders (n=10 additional), to condense previous Value Statements within the School of Allied Health Sciences and it’s programs,
to fine tune both the Vision and Mission Statements, and to begin to identify SAHS Goals.

Feedback from Key Stakeholders

Over the course of several weeks, Lynn Owens conducted face to face interviews with 10 additional Key Stakeholders who had been recommended as such for either the Kinesiology program or the Community & Environmental Health program. These
interviews were approximately 60 minutes long. A summary of themes that emerged across interviews was distributed to SPTF members (see attached) which were reviewed and then discussed further. Included in that discussion was a desire by Director Bob Wood to possibly add a
Sport Psychology track into the Kinesiology program. Thoughts were also shared about the possibility of partnering with Bogus Basin in providing a ski instructor/ski patrol certification. A brief discussion revolved around various courses currently offered within
specific programs but not across entire School. (i.e., FS 110: Introduction to Health Sciences) In conclusion, it was noted that the “data appear to be saturated” from interviews with key stakeholders so far. However, stakeholders in some areas have not yet been identified (Physical Education teachers and Athletic Directors) and their insight would be helpful to this process. Director Bob Wood would try to identify these stakeholders. Lynn Owens agreed that interviews would continue if these stakeholders could be identified.

Condense Previous Value Statements

SPTF Committee members reviewed previous Value Statements and made recommendations for condensing these into the following:

  • We believe in excellence in education to develop resourceful and innovative health professionals.
  • We value the quality of education in supporting lifelong learners and education.
  • We believe in modeling a culture of respectfulness and inclusivity to produce culturally competent professionals in health related fields.
  • We value resourcefulness to help transform our programs, students, peers, and selves.

Fine Tune Vision Statement

SPTF Committee members reviewed previous Vision Statements and made recommendations for condensing into one statement as follows:

  • The SAHS will lead in creating educated health and human performance professionals who are innovative advocates and lifelong learners supporting the advancing knowledge of lifelong health as scientists, practitioners, and educators.

Fine Tune Mission Statement

SPTF Committee members agreed that a previous Vision statement was a more applicable Mission Statement and was modified somewhat as follows:

  • The SOAHS leverages unique health related disciplines using a collaborative and resourceful approach to deliver high quality education and scholarship that advances lifelong health.

Identifying SAHS Goals

SPTF Committee members began to work on the identification of school wide goals. It was agreed that previous goals mentioned in both the College Strategic Plan and various forms of respective department strategic plans (Teaching, Research, Service, Infrastructure) did not necessarily apply across the School of Allied Health Sciences. Some frustration was expressed regarding current infrastructure needs that
continue to be unresolved and are holding various departments back from accomplishing their current goals, much less envisioning future ones. Issues of communication, cooperation, and collaboration between and amongst distinctive departments along with administrative support appear most challenging. Other challenges include limited available resources, the identification of current needs within
each department, and the task of investing in things that benefit many people.
Perhaps goals might be….

  • Infrastructure:
  • Collaboration: To create a culture of collaboration between and amongst distinctive departments.

Given current challenges and the difficulty in projecting future goals given these restraints, Lynn Owens suggested conducting a Pre-Mortem analysis of these issues. In other words, to specifically identify what is currently standing in the way of achieving
success and moving forward. To do so, each SPTF Committee member is asked to come to the next meeting on April 9, 2019 prepared to share specific issues and information as well as possible solutions and action plans to resolve these issues. This will be the major focus for the next meeting. Meeting was adjourned at 12:00 noon.

Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Lynn M. Owens
