Example Syllabus Statements
We’ve developed sample statements about generative AI use that you may use in your syllabi.
- If you decide it’s appropriate for students to use generative AI in your course, review and adapt this statement for selective, appropriate AI use.
- If you plan to disallow the use of generative AI in your course, read and adapt this sample statement prohibiting AI use.
Position Statement on AI Detection
The AI in Teaching & Learning Committee recently prepared a formal statement on AI detection tools. After extensive research, the AI in Teaching & Learning Committee advises against adopting AI detection tools at an institutional or individual level. Key reasons include:
- Unreliable Detection: High rates of false positives and negatives make current tools, such as Turnitin’s AI detector, unpredictable and potentially unfair.
- Bias Concerns: Non-native English speakers are disproportionately flagged by AI detection, raising equity concerns.
- Relationship Impact: Detection tools may foster a culture of distrust, which can negatively affect student engagement.
In lieu of detection software, the committee suggests using Boise State resources to design assignments that discourage misuse of AI, while fostering open, developmental conversations on academic integrity.
