Video Transcript – What I Wish I Would Have Known Series | Calvin’s Advice for Success at Boise State

[GRAPHIC: WHAT I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN]

[Calvin Doerr, Kinesiology Major]: My name is Calvin Doerr, and I’m a Kinesiology major. If I were to give my freshman self a piece of advice, I’d say, find all the resources on campus. There are a lot of them that I didn’t find until later in my career, like health services, mental health counseling at health services was really important for me.

[Calvin]: As well as using the writing center, the career services. There are a lot of things to help you, you just have to look a little bit. So, I suggest that freshman, take a look at all of the resources you have and, really, dive into those when you need them. Something that was really important for me when I came here, was to say yes to every opportunity that I had.

[Calvin]: My mom always told me to walk through every open door. So, that was something that I challenged myself with. Whenever I got a question, “Do you want to do an interview?”, “Would you like to join this club?”, I always said yes. Just always say yes first, even if it’s uncomfortable or something that you think you might not want to do. I’ve found a lot of growth in those ones, particularly. Even the things that I’m excited about, it might initially seem hard to say yes, but I’ve always been grateful for saying yes along the way. I’m most grateful, on campus, for the friends that I’ve met along the way.

[Calvin]: I’ve met some really successful people, and they’ve all been really helpful to me on my own path. Although they might not be doing the things that I’m doing, they’re doing their best in their own way. I went to athletic training club a couple times and just sort of talked to the people, and asking more questions about the things that were going on, on campus. Eventually, I got a job with the College of Health Sciences which help open my eyes to more things. It just seems like one thing, after another happened, and eventually I was involved in a lot of different things on campus, and I really felt like, okay this is my spot and I feel very compfortable now. Also my learning experience is from extra curriculars, and being put in difficult situations has led me to believe that I am capable of getting through those. And I think that has been invaluable to my growth.
