We know you’re excited to start your FAFSA for 2025-2026, and we’re right there with you! While you wait for the application to open December 1, there’s a simple step you can take now to make sure you’re ready: create your FSA ID.
Your FSA ID is the key to unlocking your FAFSA application, signing it electronically, and managing other federal student aid resources. Both you and at least one parent (if you’re a dependent student) will need an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA.
How to Create Your FSA ID:
- Visit the FSA ID website: Create Your FSA ID
- Fill in Your Info: You’ll need to provide your name, Social Security number, and date of birth. If you don’t have an SSN, check out the helpful resources on the site.
- Set Up Security: Pick a secure username and password, then choose some security questions to protect your account.
- Verify Your Contact Info: Adding your email and phone number will make it easier to access your account later on.
Why do this now?
Creating your FSA ID ahead of time will save you from delays when the FAFSA opens. Double-check your details (like name, birthdate, and SSN) to make sure they match exactly with your tax info—small differences can cause delays in processing.
