Braille books bring more accessibility to higher education – Pune Mirror

In India, students from Pimpri Chinchwad have started translating textbooks of graduation courses into the script to encourage academic efforts of visually impaired students. The long and difficult road that visually impaired students have to take while pursuing higher studies initiates with the lack of books in Braille scripts as they are published infrequently. This leaves no other option for these students other than discontinuing their academic ambitions after Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

Taking a step to encourage these students to continue their education, a group of engineering students from Pimpri Chinchwad — Chetan Pardeshi, Pravin Nikam, Anjikya Bhalerao and Sanjay Booch — have been converting regular textbooks of graduation and other higher education courses into Braille scripts. They have already translated books under the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) syllabi according to demand as the job of translation is not easy.
