Boise State Land Acknowledgement Statement

In the spring of 2024, Boise State University followed the precedent set by the University of Idaho, Idaho State University, and other state and regional institutions by adopting a formal land acknowledgment statement. A land acknowledgment is a respectful recognition of Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land, affirming the ongoing connection between Indigenous communities and their ancestral territories.

The Boise State land acknowledgment statement was drafted by a committee of alumni, students, and community members. This statement is available for use by anyone wishing to include it at the beginning of courses, presentations, events, or within course syllabi.

Additionally, Community Engagement and Belonging is developing a subject guide aimed at deepening understanding and engagement. The goal of this land acknowledgment goes beyond words, inspiring the community to learn more about the history and contemporary issues facing Idaho’s five federally recognized tribes and the descendants of the Boise Valley People.

“Boise State University was established upon the ancestral homelands of the Original Boise Valley People – the Newe (Shoshone), Numu (Paiute), and the Panakwate (Bannock) People – whose descendants are citizens of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Duck Valley, Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe, the Burns Paiute Tribe, and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. As an institution of higher learning, we recognize the historical impact federal policies have had on tribal people. We acknowledge the importance of strengthening tribal community engagement and offering rich historical and cultural education at Boise State University.”
