There are several reasons why a student may choose to enroll at Boise State University as non-degree-seeking, such as exploring academic interests, completing coursework to transfer to another institution, and reapplying to Boise State as degree-seeking after meeting admissions requirements. Other reasons may include:
- Personal or professional development and enrichment
- Fulfilling prerequisites for an academic program – whether at Boise State or another institution
- To audit a course
- Reasons specific to your situation
If you are taking classes through Boise State with the intent to fulfill another institution’s program requirements, please work with an academic advisor from both your home institution and the Boise State academic department that best correlates with the external institution’s program.
Whether you plan to transfer to or from Boise State, the Transfer Equivalency System (TES) tool is helpful when determining how credits may transfer across institutions. If you’d like to become a non-degree-seeking student and haven’t been admitted to Boise State, please begin the application process.

Non-Degree-Seeking Guidelines
As a non-degree seeking student, please keep the following in mind:
- You may start registering for classes once open enrollment begins, so take a look at the academic calendar for dates and deadlines. Please connect with your advisor if you need assistance with course registration.
- You can enroll in a maximum of seven credits, or take a maximum of two classes, even if they exceed seven credits.
- Non-degree-seeking status is ineligible for federal financial aid. Stay mindful of additional fees that may be associated with some courses.
- Credits earned in non-degree status can be applied towards a degree later, provided you are admitted to degree-seeking once you’re eligible.
Switching From Non-Degree to Degree-Seeking
Are you interested in changing your status from non-degree-seeking to degree-seeking? Here are the steps you must take:
- Reapply to Boise State University as a degree-seeking student. You may need to wait until all final grades are posted if you are currently taking classes through Boise State. This helps the admissions process go smoothly and ensures that your GPA is accurately assessed.
- If you haven’t already – submit all official college transcripts from prior institutions. Ensure all previously earned or new credits have been officially submitted to Boise State.
- After you’ve met all admissions requirements and have been accepted as a degree-seeking student, it’s recommended to make an appointment with an academic advisor associated with your degree program to determine next steps.
Students who initially applied for degree-seeking status but due to admission requirements, were admitted as non-degree-seeking:
For full consideration of degree-seeking status, you are to reapply through Boise State Admissions after completing 14 credits at Boise State earning a minimum GPA of 2.25.
