Carmel Major was one of the top athletes to compete in track and field at Boise State University. Named to the Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Decade team for the 1980’s, Major was a Mountain West Conference (the league women athletes competed in prior to the Big Sky Conference) champion in the Heptathlon. Twice she was named the outstanding track athlete at the league championships in 1985 and 1986. In 1985 she won the 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, and the heptathlon and was a member of the winning 4×400 meter relay teams. In four different conference meets she averaged 29.9 points with a high of 41 points in 1985. Major helped the Broncos to three conference team titles and one second place finish during her career. At the time of her induction into the Hall of Fame, Major held the Boise State records in the 100-meter hurdles (12.89), the 400-meter hurdles (58.71) and as a member of the 4×100 meter relay team (45.88). Major graduated from Boise State in 1988.
