Preventative Measures:
Please be mindful of the following, and act accordingly:
- Make sure you have consent before you engage in any sexual contact or activity. Consent is a clear and freely given yes, not the absence of a no.
- Consent is demonstrated through words or actions creating clear permission or willingness to engage in mutually agreed-upon sexual activity.
- A person who is incapacitated by alcohol and/or illegal or prescription drugs, unconscious, or asleep cannot give consent for sexual activity.
- A person can withdraw their consent to engage in sexual activity at any time.
- Consent for sexual activity cannot be obtained by force, threat, intimidation, or coercion.
- Don’t feel obligated to do anything you don’t want to. “I don’t want to” is always a good enough reason.
- Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy or sense something is wrong, do what you can to get out of that situation safely.
- If you are meeting someone for the first time, consider meeting in a public setting like a coffee shop.
- Consider telling somebody close to you if you’re going to meet someone you do not know. Let them know when and where, and that you’ll contact them within a certain amount of time.
- You can request a security escort from the Department of Public Safety by calling (208) 426-6911 or via the free Rave Mobile Safety app. To find out more about the Rave Mobile Safety App and how to download it, visit: https://www.boisestate.edu/

Boise State University takes all reports of sexual assault seriously and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. As a reminder, all reports of crimes including sexual misconduct that are reported to the Department of Public Safety are included within two business days in the Campus Crime Log.
All reports of crimes and sexual misconduct are assessed to determine whether the campus community will be alerted through a “Timely Warning.” Whether the circumstances warrant a “Timely Warning” is based on factors in federal law. Sometimes, the circumstances do not permit the University to issue a “Timely Warning,” as defined in federal law – for instance, because the University often does not have enough information, or did not receive the information timely. See University POLICY 12090, TIMELY WARNING FOR CRIME PREVENTION. Even when the circumstances do not permit a “Timely Warning” under federal law, the University can always provide crime alerts and safety awareness information to members of its community.

- A person can withdraw their consent to engage in sexual activity at any time.
- Neither silence nor a prior relationship is sufficient to indicate consent.
- Consent for sexual activity cannot be obtained by force, threat, intimidation, or coercion.
- If a person is non-participatory or states that they want to be doing something else, stop. If someone states they want to stop, do not try to convince or coerce them into continuing. If you are unsure, stop.
- If someone talks about planning to target another person at a party, confront them or get help from a friend, parent, or other trusted person to intervene.
- Be active in supporting a safe and respectful community. If you see others engaging in disrespectful or inappropriate actions, speak up and get involved, or contact someone else to assist.
- If someone looks like they may need help, ask if they’re okay. Enlist a friend, RA, bartender, or host to help you step in if needed.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, it probably is – intervene if you can.

1:49pm TEXT/PUSH: BroncoAlert/Urgent: Please check your email for information about severe weather, wildfire risk, and potential power and communication disruptions.
1:49pm EMAIL: The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures, high winds, and possible lightning in the area beginning around 8 p.m. today. These conditions increase the risk of wildfires, power outages, and loss of cell phone and radio service. As part of its Public Safety Power Shutoff Program, Idaho Power may shut down power in select areas of the community to mitigate the risk of fires. These planned outages would likely occur between 5-10 p.m. With the exception of Dona Larsen Park, the planned outages are expected to have no impact on campus. However, there may be a significant impact to the broader community, and there is also a risk for unplanned power and communication outages valley-wide. We encourage you to make a plan to stay safe in the event of a wildfire, power outage, or communication disruption, particularly if you are in a planned outage area. In addition to considering the potential impact to those in your household (including alternative sleeping locations and medical and healthcare needs), please check on family members and friends who may need assistance, and consider the needs of pets. For additional information on how to prepare for these events, please see Idaho Power and Ready.gov. Remember, during a power outage and extreme heat, prioritizing your health and safety is crucial. Take steps to stay cool, stay informed if possible, and don’t hesitate to seek help if needed. If you or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call or text 9-1-1.

9:37am EMAIL: By the end of this week, Boise is forecasted to heat up to the mid-90s. 04/22/24 BRONCOALERT:
9:46am EMAIL: Dear Boise State University Students, Faculty, and Staff, During the spring season, it is essential to consider the potential for flooding that may impact our campus. While the Boise River is a picturesque feature of our city, its proximity increases the risk of campus flooding. Rising river levels associated with periods of increased precipitation, snowmelt, and water releases from Lucky Peak can result in unsafe water recreation conditions, localized flooding in low-lying areas adjacent to the river, and groundwater seepage into university buildings. Boise State Emergency Management Office (EMO) actively monitors weather patterns and river levels to identify and assess potential threats to campus. In most cases, the EMO will send a BroncoAlert notifying campus community members of conditions that pose an imminent threat to safety or property. To help ensure the safety of the campus community, please consider the following: Stay Informed. Watch or listen to local news updates, weather forecasts, and BroncoAlerts for any flood-related advisories or warnings. Be wise about your river-related activities during high river flows. Ada County Emergency Management & Community Resilience advises that rising river flows along the Boise River can increase the risk to public safety, especially for those who recreate near or on the river. Individuals should use extreme caution or even avoid activity altogether near the river banks during these times. Currently, the Boise River is deep, cold, and fast and the river banks may be slick and unstable. It only takes 6 inches of moving water to knock someone down and only 12 inches to sweep a vehicle away. Fast water flows can push debris downriver, which can cause injury or trap an individual in or under the water. Some areas along the Greenbelt may become submerged as river levels rise. Do not walk, swim, ride, or drive through flood waters. If you approach a flooded area, turn around. Never go through barricades. Report Concerns. If you observe any signs of flooding, such as rising water levels or blocked drainage systems, please report them to the Boise State University Department of Public Safety at publicsafety@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-6911. Your prompt action could help mitigate potential damage and ensure the safety of our campus community. For more information regarding flood preparedness, please visit: Ada County How to Prepare for Flood Resources. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Boise State University Emergency Management Office at eoc@boisestate.edu. 7:50pm EMAIL: Earlier today, temperatures warmed enough to begin to thaw the ice and snow that has accumulated over the past two weeks. Temperatures are predicted to drop back down to freezing early tomorrow morning, creating a risk that everything that melted today will freeze again. Accordingly, in-person classes will not start until noon tomorrow, Friday, January 19. University offices will open as scheduled, though some services may be impacted by weather conditions. Faculty may transition in-person classes to remote. Students should check their course Canvas site or email for course-specific updates. Remote classes will be held as usual. Asynchronous online courses continue without interruption. Questions about specific events or services should be directed to the appropriate department or event sponsor. The safety of the Boise State community is always our primary concern. Because of fluctuations in weather, road conditions, and local school closures, supervisors are encouraged to be flexible with staff in the morning. Road conditions vary throughout the Treasure Valley and the decision to travel to campus ultimately rests with each individual. All members of the campus community should evaluate their own circumstances carefully and exercise appropriate judgment when making decisions related to their commute. Employees should work with their supervisors to make arrangements if an absence is warranted due to driving conditions or sudden caregiving needs due to weather-related closures. Bronco Shuttles will only be operating the Blue on-campus route as regularly scheduled. The other shuttle routes will begin at 11 AM. Please use the “VRT bus route 1” for travel between the main campus and downtown until that time. Our Facilities and Public Safety teams work diligently to clear pathways of snow and ice on campus as quickly as possible, but please exercise caution traveling to and from campus, as well as while on campus. Allow yourself extra time to travel time. If you find an area of campus that needs attention, please call (208) 426-1409 or text (208) 866-6825.
8:43am EMAIL: Weather conditions remain challenging this morning due to continued freezing rain and icy conditions. While campus and county snow and ice removal equipment continues to operate, it is impossible to clear roads, sidewalks, and parking lots of ice and snow due to ongoing precipitation. Please be aware of the following: Boise State shuttles are running but may be late. Shuttles are having difficulty operating due to road conditions. The GPS tracking system may not be accurate on the tracker app due to freezing temperatures. Parking lots and sidewalks are icy. Use extreme caution when walking. Walk like a penguin or shuffle step to reduce the risk of falling. Roads are still covered in ice and snow. Drive slowly. Leave early to give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going safely. If you’re running behind, be late rather than risk your safety. In-person classes are still running on time, but use your own best judgment in deciding whether and when it is safe for you to come to campus. Faculty and supervisors will continue to be flexible. Our Facilities and Public Safety teams are working diligently to clear snow and ice on campus as quickly as possible. Please be kind and respectful to these staff members who have been working long hours to keep you safe.

01/10/24 Public Health Notice:
4:21pm: Central District Health (CDH) has notified Boise State University of a reported case of tuberculosis (TB) in a Chaffee Hall resident.
The individual left Boise to return home on Dec. 15, 2023, and has not returned. At this time there is no known ongoing risk for TB exposure on campus. It is safe for students and staff to attend classes and participate in activities as usual.
Boise State Public Health is working with CDH to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the individual. Those identified will be contacted with information regarding screening options and recommendations. Screening is also available through primary care providers and local health departments. Most cases of TB are treatable with antibiotics that are commonly available.
No person other than those contacted directly by Boise State or CDH will need to take action. The general public is not at an increased risk of getting TB as a result of this case.
About Tuberculosis
- Most people who are exposed to TB do not get infected. It is only spread through the air in close proximity for an extended period of time.
- People who are infected cannot pass TB to others unless they are experiencing TB symptoms.
- Typical symptoms of tuberculosis disease include a chronic cough, fever, or night sweats that are persistent for several weeks and usually get worse.
People experiencing chronic symptoms who believe they may have been exposed to TB should call their primary care provider.
Updates will be posted on the Boise State Public Health website. Disease-related questions can be directed to Central District Health at (208) 327-8625. Boise State related questions can be directed to Boise State Public Health at publichealth@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-2968.
Sincerely,
