The BSU Paralegal Studies Program, American Bar Association approved, provides the student both specific and general skills as well as substantive knowledge needed for the role of a paralegal. The education includes general background courses (University core classes or equivalents) as well as some law-related classes such as constitutional law, business law, criminal justice, etc. In addition to these, the student must complete 24 credit hours of law-specialty classes. Examples include Legal Research and Writing, Civil Litigation, Real Estate Law, etc. On successful completion of the program, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion of the Paralegal Studies Program and may also use the credits for a Paralegal Studies minor.

The paralegal works under the direction of an attorney and may be assigned tasks such as drafting and responding to discovery requests, performing legal research as well as gathering other sources of information, drafting documents, initial interviewing of clients, preparing trial notes, and in some cases assumes the responsibility of office manager.
