Advising, Registration and Support Resources
Orientation Sessions
Before meeting with your advisor, you will need to complete an orientation session specific to your major. Orientation is required to enroll in classes and can be completed online, on your own time. You will receive an email with directions on how to access New Student Orientation once you are admitted to your program.
Advising: How to Schedule Advising
You will be assigned an advisor once your major has been declared and approved. After you complete orientation, you must schedule an advising appointment to register for classes. You will receive an email with instructions and a link to your advisor’s calendar.
If you are not sure who your advisor is, you can always take a look on the homepage of your myBoiseState student account to determine who they are.
Advising: What to Expect
Academic advising is a partnership between you and your advisor. Together, you will discuss and develop a plan for your degree and even talk about hands-on learning opportunities like internships and studying abroad. Advising support is essential to your success as an online student.
Your advisor is expected to:
- Support and guide you through your academic journey.
- Assist you in identifying the courses that will help you reach graduation in the most efficient way possible.
- Explain university policies, regulations, programs and procedures.
- Review your academic performance and the implications of that performance.
- Refer you to appropriate campus resources and contacts when needed.
As a student, you are expected to:
- Contact your advisor each semester and communicate regularly about changes to academic plans and timelines.
- Understand your degree requirements and academic plan.
- Notify your advisor when health, financial, academic and/or other difficulties are preventing you from being successful.
- Take responsibility for actions that affect your academic progress.
- Check your BroncoMail regularly.
Registration: How to Register
Online students typically have special class sections to enroll in. It’s important to meet with your advisor before enrolling to help assure you are in the correct sections. After you’ve met with your advisor, you can register for classes through the Student Center in your myBoiseState account.
Registration: Enrollment Appointments
Your enrollment appointment is the date that the university has determined you are able to register for classes. The Office of the Registrar will notify you by BroncoMail once your date is scheduled.
If this is your first semester at Boise State, this date will be set after you complete orientation. If you are a continuing student, this date will vary based on your class standing.
Your enrollment appointment is not an actual appointment; it is simply a date and time at which you can begin registering.
Registration: Account Holds
Having trouble registering? You may have a hold on your account. Holds can prevent you from registering for classes and may impact your financial aid.
Holds can be found under “Tasks” in the Student Center. Most holds will have detailed descriptions with information on what you need to complete. Click the title to read specific instructions.
Common holds include “Required Advising,” which can be removed by scheduling and attending an advising appointment, and “Student Financial Agreement,” which is placed on your account every semester and can be removed by accepting the agreement in the Student Center.

Support: Online Student Resources
Whether you attend classes on campus or online, you have access to a large variety of resources through Boise State Online.
Support: Academic Calendar
Please refer to the academic calendar for important dates and deadlines throughout the year.
Support: Time Management
Online classes require the same time commitment as in-person classes. You get to plan the time each day that works best for your schedule to complete learning activities, but you are still required to meet deadlines and class expectations each week. Use this resource to help you plan for the time commitment needed to be successful in each of your classes.
Support: Textbooks and Course Materials
Your textbooks will be listed with the Bronco Shop each semester. Most textbook lists are available approximately one month before the semester begins. You should be prepared to cover the cost of textbooks and course materials before receiving financial aid or starting the semester.
Print and digital textbooks may be available, free of charge, through Boise State’s Albertsons Library.
Microsoft 365 software is also available, free of charge, for all actively enrolled Boise State students. Download Microsoft 365 from Boise State.
Support: Financial Aid

Our team has expertise on education benefits for all branches, and we’re ready to help you get started.
Military Tuition Assistance
If you are an active duty military student using federal or state tuition assistance (TA), your TA paperwork must be approved through your branch’s education portal (AFVEC, GoArmyEd, MyNavyEd) and submitted in Boise State’s TA submission form prior to each session.
If you have any questions about TA, please contact the Military Programs coordinator at MilitaryPrograms@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-4230.
GI Benefits
If you are using GI Bill benefits to fund your classes, your paperwork must go through the VA and Boise State’s Veteran Services Center. Please review the information on the Veteran Services Center website to learn more about your GI Benefits and the steps that must be taken each semester.
Contact the Veteran Services Center at VeteranServices@boisestate.edu or (208) 426-3744.
