Suggested Scholarship Audition Requirements-Brass

 

TRUMPET

1. C, D, Eb, and F major scales, one octave.
2. G, A, Bb major scales, two octaves.
3. Chromatic scale two octaves, low C to high C, at quarter note = 60.
4. Lyric etude, melodic study or solo, 2-5 minutes long; for example:

  • Haydn: Concerto, 2nd movement.
  • Getchell: Second Book of Practical Studies, numbers 80 or 90.
    •

    5. Technical etude, characteristic study or solo, 2-5 minutes long;for example:

  • Goedicke: Concert Etude.
  • Handel/ Fitzgerald: Aria con Variazioni.
  • Getchell: Second Book of Practical Studies, numbers 79 or 81.
    •

    HORN

    1. Major scales, 2 octaves: C,D, Eb, F, G
    2. Etude:

  • or
    •

    3. Solo:

  • Mozart: Concerto # 3, 1st mov.t or other solo of comparable difficulty
    •

    TROMBONE

    1. Major scales up to 3 flats and 2 sharps, 2 octaves up and down in quarter notes.
    2. Chromatic scale, low F to high Bb.
    3. Etude/Solo: one or more of the following:

  • Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etudes, vol. 1, #'s 2,6, or 11.
  • Blume: 36 Studies for the Trombone, #'s 4,6, or 14.
  • Telemann/Ostrander: Sonata in F, 2nd movement.
  • Rousseau: Piece Concertante.
  • Or, any piece from the Idaho State Solo list
    •

    BASS TROMBONE

    1. Major scales up to 3 flats and 2 sharps, 2 octaves up and down in quarter notes.
    2. Chromatic scale, pedal B flat to high F, up and down.
    3. Etude and/or Solo: one or more of the following (or any on the trombone or tuba lists):

  • Blume/Fink: 36 Studies for Trombone with F Attachment, any one.
  • Fink: Studies in Legato for Bass Trombone or Tuba, any one.
  • Pederson: Elementary Etudes for Bass Trombone, any one.
  • Jacob: Cameos, any two movements.
  • McCarty: Sonata for Bass Trombone, 1st movement.
  • Or, any piece from the Idaho State Solo list
    •

    EUPHONIUM

    1. Major scales up to 3 flats and 2 sharps, 2 octaves up and down in quarter notes.
    2. Chromatic scale, low F to high Bb.
    3. Etude/Solo: one or more of the following:

  • Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etudes, vol. 1, #'s 2,6, or 11.
  • Blume: 36 Studies for the Trombone, #'s 4,6, or 14.
  • Telemann/Ostrander: Sonata in F, 2nd movement.
  • Barat: Introduction and Dance.
  • Or, any piece from the Idaho State Solo list
    •

    TUBA

    1. F and Bb major scales, 2 octaves.
    2. Chromatic scale, low F to high Bb.
    3. Etude/Solo: one or more of the following:

  • Bordogni/Jacobs: Legato Etudes for Tuba, #’s 2, 4, 7, 11.
  • Blazhevich: 70 Studies, Volume 1, #’s 6, 7, 9, 18, 21, 28.
  • Bach/Bell: Air and Bouree, both movements.
  • Haddad: Suite for Tuba, 1st movement.
  • Marcello/Little: Sonata No. 1 in F, movements 1 & 2 or movements 3 & 4.
  • Or, any piece from the Idaho State Solo list
