Graduate Performance and Pedagogy Audition Requirements

A. General: Acceptance into the Performance or Pedagogy Major of the Master of Music Degree presupposes performing ability by the candidate at the 300-level for the Pedagogy emphasis and at the 400- level for the Performance only emphasis. Information on performing levels for string instruments can be obtained by contacting the Department of Music. Auditions must be in person on the BSU Campus, though tape auditions will be acceptable if traveling to Boise is impractical. Auditions by tape must be an unedited and original tape.

B. At the Audition:

 

1. Performance Emphasis

 

A. A 20-minute audition is required
B. Three compositions of 400-level difficulty (senior performance major level.) from 3 contrasting periods of music
C. Be prepared to perform each piece in its entirety

 

1. Memorization is highly recommended in all but sonatas w/piano works.

D. Entrance decisions will be based on quality of performance, keeping in mind considerations including appropriateness of style, technical accuracy, quality/level of music, etc.

2. Pedagogy Emphasis:

 

A. A 20-minute audition is required
B. For candidates emphasizing pedagogy, three compositions of 300-level difficulty (non-performance major, Music Education or Theory-Composition major instrument) from 3 contrasting periods of music
C. Be prepared to perform each piece in its entirety

 

1. Memorization is highly recommended in all but sonatas w/piano works.

D. Entrance decisions will be based on quality of performance, keeping in mind considerations including appropriateness of style, technical accuracy, quality/level of music, etc


A. General: Acceptance into the Performance or Pedagogy Degree depends on adequate performing ability by the candidate. Information on performing levels for the classical guitar can be obtained by contacting the Department of Music. Auditions must be in person on the BSU Campus, although CD, audiocassette or video auditions will be acceptable if traveling to Boise is impractical. Such auditions must be unedited and original.

1. Performance Emphasis

 

a. A 20-minute audition is required
b. Three complete compositions of 400-level difficulty exhibiting three contrasting periods of music.
c. Memorization is highly recommended but not required.
d. Entrance decisions will be based on quality of performance, keeping in mind considerations including appropriateness of style, ornamentation, technical accuracy, quality and level of music, etc.

2. Pedagogy Emphasis

 

same as above, except at the 300 level

A. General: Acceptance into the Performance or Pedagogy major of the Master of Music Degree presupposes performing ability by the candidate at the 300-level for the Pedagogy emphasis and at the 400-level for the Performance emphasis. Information on performing levels for piano or organ can be obtained by contacting the Music Department. Auditions must be in person on the BSU Campus. though recorded auditions will be acceptable if traveling to Boise is impractical. Auditioning by recording must be approved prior to the audition by the Keyboard Faculty. A recorded audition must be an unedited and original recording, and verification of performance by memory (if a piano audition) must be supplied with the recording.

B. At the Audition:

1. Performance Emphasis: a 2O-minute audition is required.

Piano: three compositions of 400-level difficulty (senior performance major) from 3 contrasting periods of music, from memory

Organ: a Baroque composition, a 19th or 20th-century pre-1930 work and a post-1930 work
Organists will be allowed a maximum of 2 hours practice time on the Cunningham Memorial Pipe Organ.

2. Pedagogy Emphasis: a 20-minute audition is required.

Piano: three compositions of 300-level difficulty (junior level) from 3 contrasting periods of music, from memory

Organ: a Baroque composition, a 19th or 20th-century pre-1930 work and a post-1930 work
Organists will be allowed a maximum of 2 hours practice time on the Cunningham Memorial Pipe Organ.

Both Emphases:
Be prepared to perform each piece in its entirety. Entrance decisions will be based on the quality of performance, keeping in mind considerations including appropriateness of style, technical accuracy, quality level of music, etc.

 

The applicant must perform a vocal audition prior to being accepted into either program. The audition must run fifteen to twenty minutes in length and must include material chosen from the following categories:

1. an aria from the traditional major opera/oratorio repertoire: classic, romantic, or 20th century
2. a song or aria from the pre-classic period
3.a German Lied: Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, R. Strauss, etc.
4. a French melodie: Faure, Poulenc, Debussy, Berlioz, etc. and/or
an art song in Spanish or some language other than English.
5. an art song in English in a 20th-century idiom: American, British, or Canadian
