Staff Changes — Jan. 2 marks the start date for two new members of the Advancement staff. Holly Carrington returns as a technical records specialist, and Karen Vauk is the new College of Education development director. Holly previously worked for the BSU Foundation before leaving in 2006 to pursue out-of-state opportunities. Karen was previously the academic relations manager for Micron Technology Inc. and the Education Program Officer for Micron Technology Foundation.

Bronco Advocacy Network: The Alumni Association, in concert with the President’s Office, is creating a network of Boise State supporters willing to advocate for the university and higher education in Idaho. Interested citizens can register online after Jan. 4 at http://alumni.boisestate.edu to receive Web-based communication including timely updates on BSU legislative issues, suggestions on communicating with public policy makers and requests for action. Questions can be directed to Mark Arstein at markarstein@boisestate.edu.

  • Feb. 15: Alumni Legacy Scholarship applications are due. The application is available online.

Volunteer Congress — More than 50 people braved freshly fallen snow to participate in the second Volunteer Board Congress on Dec. 8 in the Interactive Learning Center. President Bob Kustra delivered the keynote address, which included a description of the emerging Bronco Advocacy Network to be launched Feb. 6. The Network is designed to galvanize Bronco alumni and friends as advocates for Boise State University. Other speakers included Mark Rudin, vice president of research, and Bruce Matthews, consultant for the Destination Distinction comprehensive campaign.

Phonathon — Thanks to the generous support of university alumni and friends, the Foundation’s annual Phonathon raised $228,394 in pledges during the fall semester. Alums were asked to make a gift directly in support of their college, and many responded generously. Pledges came from 2,781 alumni and friends, including 594 first-time donors.

BEYOND THE BLUE

  • The Fettuccine Forum is an educational forum about the history and cultural life of Boise and the Treasure Valley co-sponsored by the Center for Idaho History and Politics and the Boise Office of the Mayor. Each forum features a companion workshop offered for graduate and undergraduate credit.
  • TechHelp is a partnership of Idaho’s three state universities, providing technical and professional assistance, training and information to Idaho manufacturers, processors and inventors to strengthen their global competitiveness through continuous product and process innovation.
  • Two Boise State professors – Michelle Sabick and Ron Pfeiffer – are teaming up with the National Football League to research athlete injuries related to the use of artificial turf on football fields.
  • The College of Engineering has graduated more than 800 students in the past five years. The combined income of these working engineers is estimated to be more than $43 million per year.
