Campaign Gift Highlights:
Volunteer Profile: Lynn Johnston first met Sunny Wallace, development director for the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), in November 2006 when she was attending the Festival of Trees gala. After several conversations with Sunny and COAS Dean Marty Schimpf, Johnston joined the college’s new advisory board. As the first official board chair, Johnston leads a diverse group of community leaders who serve as advocates for the college, develop community/college collaborations, and participate in the development process.
A passionate Boise transplant, Johnston believes Boise State is essential to the Treasure Valley. “A strong university presence in our community is one of the core assets that make Boise such a viable and successful community,” she said.
Recently Johnston and her husband, Jim, attended a Food For Thought seminar featuring Greg Hampikian of the Idaho Innocence Project (IIP). They were impressed with Dr. Hampikian’s work and pledged a generous individual gift to the IIP.
In addition to her role at Boise State, Johnston volunteers for a number of community organizations, including the Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees, the Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association, the Idaho Women’s Fitness Celebration and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.
Workshop: Jennifer Neil, Foundation executive director of planned giving, collaborated with New York Life and six community nonprofits to host a charitable estate-planning workshop on March 12. The two-hour educational forum was sponsored by the Bank of the Cascades and was emceed by Boise State’s former quarterback and humanitarian Bart Hendricks. There were about 70 people in attendance and each guest was presented with a charitable and financial planning workbook plus a tutorial on several estate planning opportunities, including remainder trusts, gift annuities and wealth replacement plans. Post-workshop survey responses indicate that there is a strong desire for continuing these estate-planning forums.
Best Practices: Board members from several different colleges and advisory boards joined together Friday, March 7, to hear campaign consultant Bruce Matthews describe best practices in advancement and development. We learned that of the $295.02 billion in charitable gifts in 2006, individuals gave 75.6 percent, or $222.89 billion. While religious organizations received $96.82 billion or 32.8 percent of the gifts, educational institutions were the next most popular beneficiaries and received $40.98 billion or 13.9 of the gifts. The main reason people say they do not give is that they are not asked. If you would like to view Bruce’s PowerPoint slide presentation, contact Rika Clement at rikaclement@boisestate.edu.
Bronco Advocacy Network: Registration continues for the Bronco Advocacy Network. Interested alumni and friends can register at http://alumni.boisestate.edu/ban/ban.htm.
