Volunteer Profile: Seventeen years ago, Vera Fink answered a call from the late JoAnna “Jody” DeMeyer to serve as a member of Friends of Nursing, the volunteer board dedicated to providing scholarship support for nursing students. Chair of the group from 2002 through 2004, Vera currently heads the public relations committee and was responsible for the production and distribution of the Friends of Nursing public service announcements currently running on local television channels. Her enthusiasm is infectious — in 2007-08, Friends of Nursing disbursed more than $374,000 in scholarship aid to 174 nursing students.
A passionate Boise State volunteer, Vera said the Volunteer Board Congress held last December was a true inspiration: “I learned a lot about the value of being a metropolitan research university, not only for the students but also for the community.”
Vera has also volunteered for several community groups, including Lutheran Community Services Northwest, and although retired as an administrator for Women’s and Children’s Services at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center and as an adjunct faculty member for the Department of Nursing, she currently works part time triaging medical calls for Call St. Luke’s.
