Blocked and Quarantined Email Extensions

Details

An anti-virus scanner and spam filtering device (Barracuda) checks all incoming and outgoing GroupWise e-mail.

Barracuda does not scan BroncoMail powered by Google, or any other mail sent using Google Apps for Education.

If incoming e-mail messages are detected as originating from a known spam (junk e-mail) entity, or contain certain criteria identifying the messages as spam, the offending messages may be blocked without any notification passed on to you.

Other criteria may cause the e-mail messages to be quarantined; for further information on how spam (junk e-mail) is handled at the University, please see "How to Manage Junk E-Mail with Barracuda."

Use Barracuda to Manage Spam

You can also use the whitelist and blacklist settings in Barracuda to permanently block or allow messages from specific addresses or domains; please see our instructions for using these settings.

If the anti-virus scanner detects a virus in a file attached to an incoming e-mail message, the infected attachment is blocked and no notification is passed to the sender or to the recipient.

What Attachments are Blocked?

The University automatically blocks with no notification to the sender or recipient any incoming e-mail attachments with the following file extensions:

The University quarantines any incoming e-mail attachments with the following file extensions:

Barracuda will also uncompress any archived attachments (e.g., .zip or .rar file extension) and block or quarantine any extensions listed above.

Any password-protected archived attachments will be blocked automatically.

Outgoing E-Mails from GroupWise Addresses

If you send an e-mail with a file attachment that contains a virus, the message will be blocked. Currently, all file extensions are allowed for outgoing e-mails.

File attachments sent internally from one University GroupWise account to another are limited to 20 megabytes in size. File attachments sent off-campus or received from off-campus are limited to 20 megabytes in size.
