How Barracuda Handles Junk Email

Barracuda handles all incoming messages in one of three ways:

  1. Blocking
  2. Quarantine
  3. Tagging

Blocking

Only the most obvious spam is blocked and discarded automatically by Barracuda. Approximately eighty percent of email messages received by the University are blocked and discarded in this way.

Quarantine

The next level of spam handling is the quarantine. Messages are placed in quarantine if Barracuda is fairly certain they are spam, but is not willing to dispose of them entirely. You can view the contents of your quarantine from Barracuda’s website and decide what action should be taken with any messages contained within. This functionality will not become available for you to log in until your first spam message has been successfully quarantined. Because messages in your quarantine are likely to be spam, an e-mail notification will not be sent to your e-mail inbox. Please remember to check your quaratine at least once every week to manage spam; messages in quarantine will automatically be deleted after 15 days.

Tagging

Finally, messages that are tagged by Barracuda as potential (though unlikely) spam will be passed directly through to your e-mail inbox with a subject line that begins with [SPAM].

Manage Your Spam

Once you log in, you'll see a list of any messages in your quarantine, along with several possible actions. To perform an action, click the checkbox to the left of the item and then choose from one of the following options:

Two other actions, Classify as Spam and Classify as Not Spam, will train Barracuda to better recognize the spam that you receive and help cut down on the number of messages that slip through the initial block and make it to your quarantine.

Please note items in your quarantine will automatically be deleted after 15 days.
