Details
The Office of Information Technology is continuing an assessment of moving University employee email and calendaring systems from GroupWise to Google Apps for Education.
As part of this assessment, OIT is offering an opt-in program for faculty and staff. Any University employees currently using GroupWise can now migrate to Google Apps, with conditions.
Conditions of Moving to Google Apps
Moving from GroupWise to Google Apps requires being aware of the following caveats:
- As OIT is continuing an assessment of Google Apps for employee email and calendaring, there remains a possibility the University will not move away from GroupWise.
Meaning, if you move from GroupWise to Google Apps, you may have to eventually move back to GroupWise depending on the results of the assessment. - You agree to remove yourself from the University's calendaring system.
Colleagues using GroupWise calendaring will not be able to perform a Busy Search or proxy to your calendar information. - You will not be able to send any "*.*" mass email communications.
Mass e-mail messages cannot be sent via *.* to the GroupWise or Google Apps for Faculty and Staff systems. - Your existing GroupWise email inbox, folders and archive(s) will stay on your computer.
The migration process from GroupWise to Google Apps will not move email or calendar information to Google Apps. Instead, a program called Archive To Go will be installed on your computer and will convert the contents of your GroupWise inbox, cabinet folders, and archive(s) to a database that will reside locally on your workstation. When you move to Google Apps, you will start "fresh" with receiving email at that new account. - GroupWise will be removed from your computer.
GroupWise software will be removed from your computer after the migration is complete. - Shared mailbox access is not available.
Unlike GroupWise, shared mailbox access with other individuals is not a feature of Google Apps. - Personal address book sharing is not available.
Unlike GroupWise, you cannot share address books with other individuals with Google Apps. - Delay delivery, delivery confirmation, and message retraction are not available.
With Google Apps, you cannot delay the delivery of a message. You cannot receive a confirmation notice that someone has opened your message. And, you cannot retract a message you've already sent. - BlackBerry synchronization with Google Apps only syncs mailbox and calendar items.
Contacts are not syncronized on BlackBerry devices when using Google Apps.
