Accomplishments of Charles VII

Charles was weary of the conflict between Armagnac and Burgundy, and replaced them with loyal bourgeois whenever he dared. He had to proceed slowly, but in the end Charles can be credited with bringing the ancient feud to a close. He called a number of parlements, seeking to bring as many elements within the nation together as he could.

He introduced few fiscal innovations, but he did formalize practices that had been merely expedients in the past. He did the same with military reform. The result was that he gave France a regular system of taxation and its first standing army. We'll look at these in more detail in the following pages.
