France
Charles IV (1322-1328)
Philip's untimely death in 1322 again put the succession in question because he had only daughters. After the previous debate, though, there was never any real question of any of them becoming queen. So, the crown went to Philip's younger brother, who became Charles IV.
Succession by now had becoming a significant consideration. This was a major, though not the only, reason why Charles married three times. Despite these efforts, however, he had only daughters. In 1328, Charles in his turn fell ill and died. The French monarchy was not in crisis, but it was definitely at a crossroads. Not only did a new royal family need to be chosen, but whatever was done and however it was done would set a precedent for future succession questions. The fact that daughters had been at least theoretically eligible, but had been passed over in favor of their uncles, set a significant tone for the debates that now came into play.
