Warwick Gets His Alliance
The first stop for Clarence and Warwick was the court of King Louis XI. It took the spider king only a short while to persuade Warwick to work for a restoration of Henry VI. Warwick, the Yorkist kingmaker, was now the chief advocate of the Lancastrian cause. He was reconciled to Queen Margaret at the end of July, though only after she had been much persuaded by King Louis.
Warwick was indisputably capable at sea. In a single summer he assembled a fleet of about sixty ships, most of which he acquired through plain piracy. Edward naturally knew an invasion was likely, and did what he could. A Burgundian fleet (Flemish) patrolled the Channel, while men were raised in Kent and the West Country to stand against invasion.
Various Lancastrians in the North rebelled over that same summer, and Edward went into Yorkshire to be better able to respond. That's where he was in early August. A storm had scattered the Burgundian fleet, the wind shifted, and Warwick had his chance.
