The Naples Gambit

Lorenzo came to the Signoria with a sensational proposal. He would go to Naples himself, personally and in secret. He would negotiate face to face with the enemy.

Events for once broke in Florence's favor. Alfonso had captured another fortress not far from the city on 12 November. It being the beginning of winter, he offered a truce (a common practice at the time; even a victorious general wanted to let his troops stand down over the winter months) and Florence accepted. On 5 December, Lorenzo put his plan before the Signoria and the Ten. He left secretly at down the next day, heading for Pisa.
