The alarm spread instantly through the palace. No one knew the extent of the uprising, whether those they'd just trapped had allies or not. The doors on the ground floor were barred, the city officials armed themselves as best they could, and everyone retreated to the tower. Petrucci ordered the city bells to be rung, a signal that the commune was in danger.
Sunday was quickly becoming chaotic. Word was racing from house to house than the Medici had been murdered. Both had died, or one, or neither; rumor favored every version. The bells from the Palazzo confirmed that something was happening, without doubt, but what did it all mean?
