Oh Grow Up!
Conclusion
We like to say that life is more complicated than it used to be. We say this mainly to make ourselves feel better, but what we really mean is that life is more complicated than we remember from our own youth. We then project this perception backward, to the "good old days" and especially back into the Middle Ages.
We like to think things were Different back then. People were different; they didn't feel what we feel, believe what we believe, love what we love. We like to think the Middle Ages as exotic.
I have tried to give some indication in this essay that medieval society was richly complex—I'd say it was perhaps even more complex than is our society. There were certainly many points of difference, most especially in the influence of religion in daily life, but even among all the surprises and oddities, we still see real human beings who cared for each other.
And, really, this should be no surprise.
