Settlement with Sigismund
All along there had been some who wanted to strike terms with Sigismund and bring the kingdom back within the Empire and the Church. In 1436, a settlement was finally reached. The Hussites promised peace and were reconciled to the Church. In return, all those who currently used the chalice would be permitted to continue. But those who were not accustomed to the practice would be forbidden. In other words, Utraquism would be tolerated but would not be allowed to spread.
The agreement further stipulated that the clergy was not to own property—a very important point, for years of confiscations by Hussites had completely changed patterns of land ownership in Bohemia. The agreement was a recognition that there was no undoing what had been done.
On the other hand, many elements of the Hussite program were simply ignored. Nothing was said about infant communion, moral reform of the country, or free preaching. Discipline of clergymen was explicitly reserved to the Church.
