Founding of Tabor

This is when Mt. Tabor was founded (March 1420). It is about fifty miles due south of Prague, just off the Vitava River. Thousands arrived and the hill quickly became a permanent settlement. The atmosphere was revolutionary. Peasants gave up all their possessions and simply moved there. People saw all kinds of signs portending the end of the world. Sermons and celebrations were held almost constantly, keeping everyone's focus on religion. People gave their wealth into a common fund, from which local farmers were paid for damages done to their fields. Food was shared equally. There was not doubt for those present that they were living under a new order. This is where the radical ideas described previously were born and flourished.

What was happening at Tabor happened at other places around Bohemia as well. On 22 July 1420, the crowd at Mt Tabor numbered between forty and fifty thousand. Few cities in all Europe at the time were larger. Certainly no army was so large, nor any public assembly of any kind. The event much impressed the chroniclers.
