Heresy
Bohemia in 1400
The Kingdom of Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire at this time. It was comprised of Moravia, Slovakia, Silesia, Lusatia, and Bohemia itself. Its capital was the city of Prague.
Bohemia had risen to prominence in the mid-14th century when Emperor Charles IV made Prague his capital city. He founded Charles University there in 1348. The kingdom escaped the great plague, though later visitations did take their toll, and it prospered economically.
Germans and Slavs mixed here unevenly. The German influence was especially strong in Silesia where they were not only in the towns but also formed a major part of the nobility. Moravia and Slovakia were mainly Slav. Bohemia itself was mixed and Prague was similarly divided. There the Germans dominated positions of power, having come with the Wittelsbach emperors, but Slavs comprised the greater portion of the general population.
The division between German and Slav, and the unequal distribution of power, were to play a key role in the Hussite revolt.
