RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • The biology and life history of local insects that are rare or potentially threatened species due to the activities of man and his animals.
    • My major current project involves a species of Cicindelidae (tiger beetle) endemic to the dunes of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. This species, Cicindela arenicola occurs in open areas bordering large dunes and is potentially threatened by introduced plants which are colonizing these open areas. Independent studies by undergraduate students have been done on different aspects of this project during the past six years.

    • Another recent project involving undergraduates was the rearing of adults of the family Vermileonidae (wormlions) which is a new record for Idaho. The predatory larvae of this family of Diptera live in dirt pits in a manner like that of the antlions in the order Diptera.
