1992-present
Symphonic Winds first began in 1992 as a student organization, with 64 students and 3 faculty members. Marcellus Brown has served as the director since 2003.
Symphonic Winds’ directive with their organization has always been to give members the opportunity to learn and grow as musicians, gain invaluable large ensemble experience, and function as an intricate part of the overall goals of the College of Arts and Science by exposing its members to the discipline of the arts.
They have also been recognized as one of the premier large wind ensembles in the Northwest, and have performed at state and regional music conferences. The ensemble performs literature from the complete spectrum of contemporary music, traditional repertoire and large chamber ensemble music written for winds and percussion. The group has produced seven CD’s and commissioned three new works for band. The ensemble is open all students through full auditions at the beginning of the fall semester and limited auditions in the spring.
